Practical Tips for Business Travel

businesstravelFor most CEOs in the business world, business travel is a necessary evil. So to help you enjoy a more comfortable business trip, consider the following tactics.

Before the trip

Charge all electronic devices that you’ll need the night before you travel. Remember to bring along appropriate electrical plug adapters and USB cords which can also be used to charge devices connected to your laptop.

Develop an effective packing strategy. It does not matter whether you are a frequent traveler or have only been on a handful of trip, it’s always easy to forget something. Follow the advice of Atul Gawande (author of The Checklist Manifesto). His words of wisdom? Optimize performance. Whether you are a doctor, business traveler or pilot, always keep a checklist of items you’d need. Cross off things until you are sure you’ve got everything.

Note that there is no right or wrong way to pack items in a travel bag. While some people insist on folding, others think that rolling is the better option. The truth of the matter is that packing is a personalized thing. Stick to what you’re used to.

During your flight

Some people dread long flights because at the end of the flight, it leaves them sore. Well, there is a small trick you can use to keep long-flight soreness at bay. The secret?  Bring a tennis ball with you. It’s great to roll the tennis under your feet or even thighs. They are small, inexpensive and very easy to replace. Eat right. Make a point of eating a good meal prior to your flight. There is nothing more depressing that coming into town, being hungry and not having a clue as to where you should eat. Stay away from heavy foods and alcohol.

When you land Figure out your jet lag cure. We react differently to changing time zones. How do you cope? For a start, you might consider later flights which allow you to sleep overnight. As a result, you wake up refreshed and ready to take on new challenges.

Return trip

Another well kept-secret among seasoned business travelers is that they always bring disposable items that do not necessarily have to be included in the return trip. Check that all your papers are in order for the return trip.
